Website Intensive vs Custom Website vs Website System

Website Design Intensive, Custom Website, or Custom Website System: Which Is Right for Your Business?
Not every business needs the same kind of website. Here's how to figure out which approach makes the most sense for yours. If you've been looking into professional website design, you've probably seen that there are quite a few different ways to go about it.
Some designers offer websites completed in a matter of days, sometimes even one day. Others spend several weeks or months developing a completely custom experience. And then there are websites that require a whole lot more extensive planning, functionality, and behind-the-scenes development. So, what exactly is the difference? And more importantly, how do you know which one your business actually needs?
At Thrive Design Co., I offer three primary approaches to website design: my Website Design Intensive, Signature Custom Website Package, and Custom Website System Design. While all three result in a professionally designed website, the process, level of strategy, customization, and functionality involved can look very different.
And here's something I want to make very clear from the beginning... The most expensive option isn't automatically the best option for your business. A website should be an intentional investment. That means choosing an approach that makes sense for where your business is right now, what you're trying to accomplish, and what you realistically need your website to do. You shouldn't necessarily book with the first designer you talk to who automatically tells you you need to drop $10K on your website right from the beginning. So let's break down all three of my website offers!
First, Why Do I Offer Three Different Website Design Services?
The simplest and most straightforward answer is because businesses aren't one-size-fits-all, and your website shouldn't be either.
I've worked with business owners who know EXACTLY what they want, have beautiful branding and professional brand photography ready to go, and really just need someone with the expertise to bring everything together into a polished, functional website for them.
I've also worked with more established businesses that have grown considerably since their original website was first made. Their services have changed, their audience has evolved, and they've reached a point where their website needs more than just a visual refresh.
And then there are businesses whose websites need to accomplish significantly more than introducing the company and encouraging someone to reach out. They might need customers or clients to make reservations, purchase products, access resources, register for events, or navigate different services and business locations. Sometimes, their website needs to connect with other systems they use to operate their business on a day-to-day basis.
Those are three very different sets of needs. So, rather than squeezing every project into the same package, I've structured my services around three levels of web design support:
Website Design Intensive:Ā Focused, efficient website design for small businesses that already have a clear direction and the necessary content ready to go. They know who they're trying to reach, have their services and offers established, and have a solid understanding of what they want their website to accomplish. They might have already explored other websites for inspiration and have a general idea of the look and feel they're going for. Essentially, most of the foundational groundwork has already been laid beforeĀ coming to me. They don't need an extensive strategy or discovery process, they need an experienced designer to take what they've already got in their head and bring it all together into a professional, beautiful, cohesive, and functional website.
Signature Custom Website:Ā A more comprehensive, strategy-led website design experience for small businesses that want or need a fully customized online presence, along with additional guidance on the strategy and foundational decisions behind it. Maybe they need help researching their competitors and identifying opportunities to stand out online, figuring out how to organize and present their services in a way that makes sense to potential customers or clients, or refining their understanding of their target audience so their website speaks directly to the right people. Rather than jumping straight into the design, we spend more time exploring the business, its audience, and its goals to make sure the website we're creating isn't just beautiful, but intentional in how it communicates their value and guides visitors toward taking action.
Custom Website System Design:Ā A highly tailored approach for small businesses that need more complex functionality, content structures, integrations, or operational capabilities. Think more than just an informational website.Ā This option is particularly well suited for businesses that rely on their website as an important part of their day-to-day business operations. That could mean an e-commerce store, online restaurant ordering, a membership site with paid access to content, a vacation rental website with integrated reservations, or a more involved booking system for services. It could also mean managing large amounts of content, connecting multiple platforms, or creating workflows that help the business operate more efficiently. Essentially, when your website needs to do more than introduce your business and encourage someone to reach out, and those additional requirements involve more complex planning or development, this is where a Custom Website System comes into play.
And while these services vary in scope, they're not necessarily stepping stones from one to the next. The right fit depends on how much foundational work you've already done, how much strategy and customization your website needs, and what you actually need it to do for your business.
Here's what that actually looks like.
1. Website Design Intensive: When You've Done the Groundwork, and You're Ready to Bring It All Together
Investment: $2,000 | Timeline: One reserved business week
Let's say you've spent the last several months getting your business ready for its next chapter or season. You've invested in professional branding, established your services and pricing, identified your target audience, and worked through what you want potential customers to know about your business.
You've written your website content, gathered your photos, and maybe even saved a collection of websites that inspire you. The pieces are there, and now you just need someone who knows how to put them together.
That's exactly what my Website Design Intensive is designed for. Rather than taking you through weeks of extensive discovery, market research, and strategic planning, we're able to focus on bringing the foundational work you've already completed into a professional, cohesive website. And because we're working with an established creative direction, we can accomplish quite a bit in a relatively short amount of time.
What Does a Website Design Intensive Actually Look Like?
My Website Design Intensive is a focused, collaborative design experience completed during one reserved business week. Instead of designing your website entirely from scratch, I use my curated website sections or an approved Wix template as the starting point.
What I mean by sections is that I've spent time using my design experience putting together custom-designed hero sections, about sections, services sections, testimonials sections, and more that are beautiful and designed not to look like all the generic ones you might see otherwise.
What I mean by an approved template is that we can also intentionally choose a website template from the hundreds of professionally designed Wix website templates available in their template library, based on finding one that matches one or more of theseā your industry, the look and feel that you're going for, or the overall feel and layout that you're wanting.
From there, I customize the design of the entire site to reflect your business's brand fonts, colors, photography, messaging, content, and overall personality. Your Intensive includes four core pages, typically Home, About, Services, and Contact, along with responsive design, foundational SEO, essential website functionality, and assistance preparing your website for launch.
It also includes two consolidated refinement rounds and a website walkthrough video tutorial to help you feel comfortable managing your business's new online home.
Does Using an Established Design Framework Mean My Website Will Look Generic?
Not at all! I think there's a common misconception that using an existing design framework automatically means ending up with a cookie-cutter website. But a design framework is simply a starting point. Think about how many homes have similar floor plans but look ENTIRELY different once you consider the finishes, furniture, colors, and personality of the people living in them. Websites can work a lot like that.
Your branding, photography, content, typography, personality, and the overall vibe, and the way everything is thoughtfully brought together, have a tremendous influence on the final result. And you're still getting the benefit of having an experienced designer make decisions about visual hierarchy, spacing, layout, usability, and how your website comes together as a whole.
The difference is that we're not spending weeks developing original layouts and exploring multiple creative directions. Instead, we're using an established structural foundation to make the design process more efficient.
What Are You Really Paying For?
You're paying for professional expertise and execution without investing in an extensive strategy process you don't necessarily need. And I think that's an important distinction. Just because you've done the groundwork doesn't mean you should have to figure out how to design and build the website yourself.
There's still an incredible amount of value in having someone who understands website design take those pieces and turn them into a polished, easy-to-navigate experience, with conversion in mind. You're also benefiting from a more concentrated timeline, which can be particularly valuable if you're preparing to launch a new business, introduce updated branding, or finally replace a website that no longer represents your brand well.
Who Is the Website Design Intensive Best For?
This is a great fit for business owners who:
Already have their branding, messaging, services, and target audience established.
Have completed website copy and photography ready before the project begins.
Know what they want their website to accomplish.
Need a relatively straightforward informational website.
Are comfortable with a professionally customized design framework.
Can be easily available to provide timely feedback during their reserved project week.
Want professional website design without a lengthy discovery and development process.
For example, let's say you're a wedding photographer who's recently rebranded. You have a beautiful new visual identity, an established collection of portfolio images, clearly defined packages, and website copy that communicates your approach to wedding photography.
You don't necessarily need someone to conduct extensive research into your business model or help you figure out how to describe your services. You need someone who can turn those existing pieces into a cohesive, professional website that showcases your work and encourages potential clients to reach out. An Intensive could be a fantastic fit.
When Might an Intensive NOT Be the Right Choice?
Here's where I encourage business owners to be very realistic about how prepared they actually are. If you're still struggling to identify your ideal target audience or client, aren't sure how to position your services, need help deciding what information belongs on your website, or have absolutely no idea where to start with copywriting (the written content across your site), a one-week Intensive may feel restrictive or add unnecessary pressure.
Not because we couldn't create something attractive, but because we'd be trying to work through foundational decisions during time that's already been reserved for designing and building the website. And those decisions deserve more attention than that. Likewise, if you're looking for highly original layouts, extensive customization, or more involved functionality, we might need to consider another approach.
The bottom line:Ā An Intensive works best when the foundation is already strong, and you're ready for someone to bring everything together.
2. Signature Custom Website: When You Need More Than Someone to Put the Pieces Together
Investment: Starting at $5,800 | Timeline: Approximately 8ā10 weeks
Now, let's say your situation looks a little different. You've been running your business for several years, and you're doing well. You've developed a great reputation, refined your services, and gained a better understanding of the customers or clients you love working with. But your website? Well, it hasn't necessarily kept up...
Maybe you've added new services or changed your offers significantly, raised your prices, or started attracting a different type of client or customer. Maybe you know your branding and website don't accurately communicate the level of service or quality your business provides, or maybe you've tried updating your website yourself, but you keep running into the same problem: you know something needs to change, but you're not exactly sure what. You're tired of trying to piece it together on your own with what little free time and web design skills you've got.
This is where my Signature Custom Website Package comes in. Rather than jumping straight into design, we spend more time understanding your business, your goals, your audience, and how your website can help connect all those pieces.
What Makes the Signature Custom Website Process Different?
With an Intensive, a lot of the website's strategic foundation has already been established before we get started. With a Signature Custom Website, developing and refining that foundation is actually part of our process.
We might start by taking a closer look at your competitors. Not because we want your website to look like theirs, but because understanding how other businesses position themselves can help us identify opportunities for yours to stand out.
We might examine how your services are currently organized and whether that structure makes sense from a customer or client's perspective. Or we might explore your target audience more closely to understand what they need to know before they feel comfortable reaching out. All of those insights inform how we structure, write for, and design your website, and that's a big part of what makes this process different.
What Does Website Strategy Actually Mean?
The word strategyĀ gets thrown around a lot in the design industry, so I think it's worth explaining what it actually looks like and elimiate a lot of the ambiguity. Let's say you own a wellness practice that offers six different services. You know what those services are, and you understand the value they provide, but when it comes to presenting them on your website, you're not sure where to start.
Should everything live on one Services page? Should each service have its own dedicated page? Should you organize your services by treatment type, client/customer needs, or the results people are hoping to achieve? And how much information should someone have to read before they're ready to book?
Those aren't just simple aesthetic decisions. They're strategic decisions that influence how easy your website is to understand, how visitors navigate it, and how effectively it communicates what you offer.
Or consider a business that's repositioning itself to attract a more premium clientele. Maybe your current website places a heavy emphasis on affordability and convenience, but your business has evolved into a more specialized, high-touch experience.
You might need to rethink how you communicate your value, which aspects of your process deserve emphasis, and what potential clients and customers need to understand about working with you. That doesn't necessarily mean changing your entire business strategy. It means making sure your website accurately and intentionally communicates the business you've built.
What Are You Really Paying For?
You're investing in research, strategic guidance, past experience, and a fully customized website designed around your business's specific needs. And much of that value comes from the decisions made before the website is actually built. During this process, we're considering things like:
How your business is positioned within its market.
What your target audience needs to know before taking action.
How your services and offers should be organized.
What sets your business apart from its competitors.
How visitors should move through your website.
Which pages and information deserve the most emphasis.
How design, messaging, and functionality can work together to support your goals.
Then, rather than adapting your content to an established layout framework, we're developing original page designs around those decisions. My Signature Custom Website Package includes up to five fully custom-designed core pages, along with the discovery, research, planning, responsive design, foundational SEO, and launch prep that support the finished experience. You also get opportunities for refinements, a website walkthrough video tutorial, and post-launch technical correction support.
Who Is the Signature Custom Website Best For?
This package is particularly valuable for businesses that:
Have outgrown their current website.
Have evolved their services, audience, positioning, or pricing.
Need help organizing and presenting their offers.
Want a more distinctive, fully custom online experience.
Have an established business but need additional website-specific strategy.
Want to better communicate the value and quality of their services or offers.
Need more research and planning before moving into design.
Are investing in a website that better reflects where their business is today and where it's heading.
For example, let's say you own a luxury salon. Your space is beautiful, your staff is talented, and your brand photography is incredible. You've invested a great deal into creating an elevated experience for your clients... But your website feels pretty basic. There's nothing necessarily wrongĀ with it, it has the essential information, and people can find your booking link, but the overall experience doesn't really reflect what someone can expect when they walk through your doors. And that could be the difference between someone filling out that inquiry form or not.
And maybe it's not simply a matter of changing the fonts or adding better photos. We might need to rethink the layout, how your services are organized, how you communicate your client experience, how you implement your brand colors on the site, and/or how the design supports your premium positioning. That's the type of project where a Signature Custom Website can be extremely valuable.
Does My Business Have to Be Established to Benefit From This Package?
Not necessarily. While established businesses usually benefit from this level of strategy and customization, newer businesses can, too. For example, you may be launching a business with a specialized audience, multiple services, or positioning that requires more strategic consideration. If your website needs a thoughtful discovery process and original design, this package could make sense even if you're just getting started.
On the flip side, you could have been in business for 15 years and still be a perfect candidate for an Intensive. It's not about how long you've been in business. It's about what your website needs from the design process.
When Might This Package Be More Than You Need?
If you already have a well-defined business direction, complete content, and relatively straightforward website requirements, you might not need the additional research and custom design involved. And that's perfectly fine.
There's no benefit in paying for weeks of strategy and mapping things out if the important decisions have already been made and your website needs can be addressed through a more streamlined process. Likewise, if your project involves extensive technical functionality or more complicated website systems, we may need to develop a custom scope that addresses those requirements.
The bottom line:Ā My Signature Custom Website Package is designed for businesses that need more thoughtful website-specific strategy, original design, and a collaborative process that goes beyond simply implementing an existing direction.
3. Custom Website System Design: When Your Website Needs to Play a Bigger Role in Your Business Operations
Investment: Typically starting at $8,000 | Timeline: Based on project scope
So far, we've talked primarily about websites that help businesses communicate what they do, establish credibility, and encourage potential clients and customers to take the next step... But what if your website needs to do more than that? What if clients or customers need to purchase products, manage reservations, access paid resources, register for events, or interact with information that's constantly changing? What if your website needs to connect with other systems that help you run your business? That's where my Custom Website System Design service comes into play.
What Is a Custom Website System?
A Custom Website System is designed around businesses with more involved functional, technical, or operational requirements. In other words, we're thinking beyond the pages people see and considering what the website actually needs to do.
Now, that doesn't necessarily mean we're developing an elaborate piece of custom software from scratch. In most cases, the best solution involves configuring and integrating existing tools in a thoughtful way. The goal is to identify the right functionality for your business and bring everything together into an experience that's useful, manageable, and easy for your customers to navigate.
What Are Some Examples of Custom Website Systems?
Let's look at a few different types of businesses...
A Restaurant or Food & Beverage Business
A relatively straightforward restaurant website might include a menu, hours, location, photo gallery, and contact info. But what if customers also need to place orders online, purchase gift cards, make reservations, or browse a frequently changing menu with multiple categories and options?
Those additional requirements and important details might introduce more involved integrations, content structures, and customer workflows. Depending on the specific functionality and tools involved, that could warrant a Custom Website System.
A Vacation Rental Business
A simple vacation rental website might showcase a property, highlight amenities, and direct visitors to an external booking platform. But a business managing multiple rental properties could need individual property listings, availability calendars, booking integrations or a booking option that lives on the site itself, searchable amenities, and connections to property management software.
Suddenly, the website is doing much more than introducing the business. It's helping customers and guests find accommodations and complete reservations while potentially supporting the company's day-to-day operations.
A Membership-Based Business
Let's say you offer educational resources, courses, or exclusive content through a paid membership. Your website might need to manage customer accounts, restrict access to certain content, process payments, and organize an expanding library of resources, teaching videos, or tutorials.
There might also be different membership levels or user permissions to take into consideration. Those requirements can involve considerably more planning than a traditional informational website.
A Business With Multiple Locations or Extensive Content
Advanced functionality doesn't always involve payments or customer accounts. Maybe you're a growing business with several locations, numerous service categories, and dozens of individual pages.
You need visitors to easily find the information that's relevant to them, while also making the website manageable for your team behind the scenes.
In that situation, we might need to develop a more sophisticated content management system (CMS), establish reusable content structures, or create filtering and navigation experiences that make the website easier to use.
Does Every Business With Online Booking or E-Commerce Need a Custom Website System?
No, and this is an important distinction. Just because your website needs an online store or booking functionality doesn't automatically mean you need my most extensive service. Some features can be implemented relatively easily using existing business tools.
For example, adding a basic booking widget to a service-based website might be entirely manageable within a more traditional website project. But creating a more complex booking experience involving multiple services, locations, schedules, customer, guest, or client requirements, and third-party integrations could be an entirely different story.
The same applies to e-commerce. A business selling a handful of products might have very different needs from a business managing a large catalog with variations, specialized shipping requirements, and integrations with other business systems. It's the complexity of your specific requirements that determines the appropriate scope, not just the presence of a particular feature.
What Are You Really Paying For?
You're investing in a website that's planned and developed around the more complex ways your business needs to function online. That might involve additional technical planning, configuring platforms and integrations, establishing content structures, developing customer or client workflows, and thoroughly testing how everything works together.
And depending on your business's needs, it may also involve strategy and fully custom design similar to what you'd receive through my Signature Custom Website process. That's another reason these services shouldn't be viewed as three consecutive levels. A Custom Website System might potentially require everything involved in a strategic website redesign, plusĀ additional technical and functional development.
Or it might be a relatively straightforward visual experience supported by a more advanced system behind the scenes. The scope's determined by your specific goals and needs.
Who Is Custom Website System Design Best For?
This approach might be right for businesses that:
Rely on their website to facilitate transactions, bookings, registrations, or memberships.
Need to connect multiple business platforms or tools.
Manage extensive or frequently changing content.
Need more involved customer experiences or automated workflows.
Have multiple locations, audience groups, or service categories requiring advanced organization.
Need functionality that extends beyond a traditional informational website.
Are migrating or restructuring an existing and/or more technically involved website.
A Word About Adding More Functionality
One thing I always encourage business owners to remember is that more functionality doesn't automatically equal a better website. Just because you canĀ integrate a tool, automate a process, or add another feature doesn't necessarily mean you should.
Every additional feature should serve a meaningful purpose. Sometimes, a simple solution is genuinely the best solution, and other times, investing in a more comprehensive website system can make a real difference in how efficiently your business operates or how easily customers or clients interact with you. The goal is to determine which is true for your particular business.
The bottom line:Ā Custom Website System Design is for businesses whose website requirements extend beyond standard design and informational functionality, requiring a more tailored approach to planning, technical implementation, and ongoing usability.
Comparing the Three Website Design Services
Now that we've explored the differences, here's a side-by-side look at what each service is designed to provide.

Still Not Sure Which Web Design Service You Need? Let's Walk Through a Few Scenarios
Sometimes it's easier to understand these differences when you see how they actually apply to real-world situations.
Scenario 1: You're Launching a New Business and Have Everything Ready. You've invested in professional branding, written your copy, established your offers, and gathered your photography. Your website mostly needs to introduce your business, explain your services, and encourage inquiries. I'd likely recommend the Website Design Intensive. You've already completed the foundational work, and your needs are relatively straightforward. We can focus our time on professional implementation as opposed to an extended discovery process.
Scenario 2: You've Been in Business for Years, but Your Website Feels Outdated. Your business has grown and evolved, but your existing site doesn't accurately reflect your current services, audience, brand, visual identity, or overall positioning anymore. You know it needs work, but you're not exactly sure how the information should be organized or what changes would make the biggest difference. I'd likely recommend the Signature Custom Website Package. The additional research, planning, and customization would give us an opportunity to address more than the visual appearance of your website!
Scenario 3: You Have Great Branding but Need a More Advanced Booking Experience. You know your audience, have your content prepared, and don't necessarily need extensive brand or messaging guidance. But you operate a vacation rental business with several properties, and you need availability calendars, individual property listings, and integration with your booking management software. I'd likely recommend Custom Website System Design. Even though you've already completed the foundational work, your technical requirements might call for a more involved scope.
Scenario 4: Your Business Is New, and You Still Need Help Figuring Out How to Present Your Services. Maybe you know what you offer, but you're having a hard time translating everything into website pages. You're not sure which services deserve their own pages, what info visitors need, and how to communicate what makes your business different. I'd likely recommend the Signature Custom Website Package. Not inherently because your business is new, but because you need additional strategic guidance before design begins.
Scenario 5: You Have a Small Online Store and Need a Professional Website. You have an established brand and a handful of products. Your content's ready, & you need a straightforward shopping experience. We'd need to look at the details before choosing a service. A simple online store doesn't automatically require Custom Website System Design. Depending on the number of products, necessary integrations, and other requirements, we may be able to handle your project through a more streamlined approach... And that's precisely why I prefer discussing your needs before automatically placing every project involving e-commerce into the same category!
One Crucial Thing All Three Web Design Services Have in Common: Visual Branding
Before we go any further, there's something I want to emphasize that applies to every single oneĀ of my website design services, regardless of which option you choose.
Your website needs a STRONG visual brand identity to build upon.
And when I say branding, I'm talking about more than just having a logo... Your visual brand identity is the collection of elements that work together to create a recognizable, consistent look and feel for your business. That includes your logo and its variations, your brand colors, font system, photography, graphic elements, personality, and the overall visual direction that communicates your brand's personality.
All of these elements establish the foundation for how your business looks and feels across all touchpoints of your businessā from your website and social media to your packaging, signage, and marketing materials.
Why Does Your Branding Matter So Much When It Comes to Website Design?
Think of your website as an extension of your brand, rather than something entirely separate from it. When someone visits your website, everything they see contributes to their first impression of your business. The colors, fonts, imagery, layouts, and overall presentation work together to communicate who you are, what you offer, and the kind of experience someone can expect when working with you.
When those elements are cohesive and intentional, it's much easier to create a website that feels polished, professional, and distinctly you. They also help reinforce brand recognition and trust as potential customers or clients interact with your business across different platforms.
But when those foundational elements haven't been established, we're essentially trying to create a cohesive website without a clear visual direction to guide us. And while I can certainly make design decisions throughout the website process, there's an important difference between applying an established visual identity to a website and developing that identity from scratch.
Having a Logo Doesn't Automatically Mean You Have a Brand Identity
This is probably one of the BIGGEST misconceptions I see when it comes to branding. You might have a logo you absolutely love, but have you established the fonts your business consistently uses? Do you have a defined color palette, including supporting colors? Have you considered what style of photography and imagery best represents your business? What about supporting graphic elements, visual consistency, and how everything works together beyond the logo itself?
If the answer to most of those questions is no, you likely have a logo, but not yet a fully developed visual brand identity. And there's nothing inherently wrong with starting there! Plenty of small businesses begin with a simple logo and gradually develop their branding as they grow.
But when you're preparing to invest thousands of dollars into a professional website, those foundational decisions become much more important. The stakes are a little higher.
Without them, your web designer has to either make those brand-level decisions during the website project or work with whatever limited visual assets are available. That can absolutely restrict how distinctive and cohesive the finished website feels, or how well the website converts, regardless of how much time or money is invested in its design.
A beautifully designed website can only do so much when the visual identity behind it hasn't been thoughtfully developed.
Does That Mean I Have to Invest in Professional Branding Before Getting a Website?
Not necessarily, but it is something I very strongly recommend. Professional branding is one of the best investments you can make when you're serious about building a cohesive, recognizable brand. A good brand designer doesn't just choose pretty colors and fontsā they consider SO many different aspects of your business, from your audience to positioning, personality, and the way you want your business to be perceived.
That deeper level of strategy and creative development provides an INCREDIBLY valuable foundation for your website. Instead of guessing which visual elements best represent your business, we're working with an established identity designed to communicate those things intentionally.
And when a thoughtfully developed brand identity is paired with strategic website design, the two can work together to create a much stronger, more consistent client or customer experience. However, I also understand that not every business owner has invested in professional branding yet.
Maybe you've developed your own branding, or at least have the basics in place. Or you've worked with someone in the past to establish your logo, color palette, and fonts. If those elements are cohesive, consistent, and still appropriately represent your business, we might already have a workable foundation for your website project!
The important thing is that your visual identity has been established BEFORE the website design process begins, whether you've created it yourself or worked with a professional.
What if My Branding Isn't Quite There Yet?
If you currently have nothing more than a logo, a couple of colors you like, and a Pinterest board full of inspiration, I'd encourage you to address your visual branding before jumping into a website project.
That's not because your business needs to have everything perfectly figured out. It's because I want your website investment to go as far as possible, and your visual branding plays a significant role in the quality and consistency of the finished product.
A Website Design Intensive isn't intended to include developing an entire visual identity from scratch, and while my Signature Custom Website and Custom Website System services involve more extensive planning and customization, that doesn't automatically mean full brand identity development is included in those packages either.
If your visual branding needs to be established or refined first, we can discuss that as a separate service and determine the best order of operations.
And if you're planning to invest in both branding and website design, even better! Developing those elements together can create a much more seamless experience and a more impactful end result, because your visual identity can be thoughtfully carried through every part of your online presence by the same designer while everything is still fresh and new.
Ultimately, I don't want you investing in a beautiful new website only to realize that the underlying visual identity isn't accurately representing your business and you end up being less than ecstatic with the final result. I want your investment to go as far as possible and for you to end up with something you
.
Your branding establishes the visual foundation. Your website brings that foundation to life in a way that's functional, engaging, and designed around your business goals. And when both are thoughtfully developed, you're giving your website a MUCH better opportunity to make the impression you want it to make.
Five Questions to Ask Yourself Before Choosing a Website Design Service
If you're still deciding, here are the questions I'd encourage you to consider...
Have I Already Done the Foundational Work? Do you feel confident that you know who you're trying to reach, what you're offering, how you wanna position your business, and what you need your website to communicate? Or would you benefit from working through some of those decisions with a professional?
Is My Website Primarily Informational, or Does It Need to Perform More Involved Functions? Think about what happens when someone visits your website. Are they mostly learning about your business and deciding whether to contact you, or do they need to make purchases, manage appointments, access accounts, interact with a content library, or complete other tasks?
Do I Need a Fully Custom Design Experience? Would an established design framework, professionally customized to your branding and content, serve your needs? Or would your business benefit from original layouts and a more extensive design process?
How Prepared Am I to Begin? Are your branding, copy, photographs, and other essential materials ready to go? Or are there still important decisions and content development tasks that need to happen before your website can be designed?
What Do I Actually Want My Website Investment to Accomplish? Maybe your priority is establishing credibility & finally having a professional online presence. Maybe it's communicating your value more effectively and improving how potential clients or customers understand your services. Or maybe it's creating a more functional online experience that supports your audience and the way your business operates. Those goals aren't necessarily interchangeable, and your answer can tell us a lot about which approach makes the most sense.
A Few More Things Worth Knowing
Absolutely not. The difference is the process, scope, and level of customization involved.
An Intensive still benefits from professional design expertise and thoughtful implementation. It's simply designed for businesses that don't need the same degree of preliminary research, strategy, or original layout development. A more extensive process isn't automatically a better process if your business doesn't actually need it.
Will My Website Be Optimized for Search Engines?
Foundational SEO considerations are part of my website design process, although the depth of research and implementation varies based on the service and scope. For example, my Signature Custom Website Package includes more extensive opportunities to research relevant search terms and consider how website structure and content can support organic visibility. And for businesses with more complex websites, SEO planning may need to account for things like content architecture, dynamic pages, or existing website migrations. It's also important to understand that foundational SEO isn't the same as an ongoing SEO campaign, and no website designer can guarantee particular search rankings.
What if I Need Help With My Website Copy?
For a Website Design Intensive, your website copy should be completed before your reserved project week begins. My Signature Custom Website Package provides more opportunities to refine the organization, clarity, and presentation of your existing content. If you need full website copywriting or more extensive content development, we can discuss that separately and determine the appropriate scope!
Can I Start With a Smaller Website and Expand Later?
In many cases, yes! Your website doesn't necessarily need to launch with every feature or page you might someday want. I intentionally design all my client websites on Wix, so that you have a website that can grow with your business. Sometimes, beginning with a strong, manageable foundation and expanding as your business grows is the most practical approach. Of course, future requirements matter, and if you already know you're going to need specialized functionality, it's worth discussing that upfront so we can make informed decisions about your website's structure and platform.
What if I Don't Know Which Service I Need?
That's COMPLETELY okay. I don't expect you to understand every technical consideration or determine the appropriate scope of your own website projectā that's part of what I'm here to help with and what discovery calls are for! When you reach out, we'll discuss your business, what you're trying to accomplish, what you've already prepared, and any particular functionality or goals you have in mind. From there, I can help recommend the approach that makes the most sense.
The Best Website Design Service Isn't Necessarily the Most Expensive One
If there's one thing I hope you take away from this article, it's that choosing a website design service shouldn't be about getting the biggest package or checking the most boxes. It should be about investing in the work your business actually needs.
Sometimes, that's a focused, efficient design process that brings your existing branding and content together. Sometimes, it's a more comprehensive experience that helps you refine your messaging, organize your content, and create a fully custom online presence. And sometimes, it's a more involved website system that supports the functional and operational needs of your business.
All three have value, but that value looks different depending on where you're starting and what you're trying to accomplish. And I'd much rather recommend the right solution for your business than sell you a more extensive package just because it's available. Your website is an investment, and I believe that investment should be intentional.
