Ways to Make WFH More Fun During the Summer

Ahh, summer. That magical time of year when your inbox still floods, your clients still need things, and yet all you want to do is lay in a hammock, sip something fruity, and pretend your laptop doesn’t exist. If you’re a work-from-home creative or service provider, you know the struggle: how do you actually enjoy summer when your office is... your kitchen table?

Spoiler alert: it doesn’t have to be all business or all beach. You can absolutely create that carefree summer energy without ghosting your clients or quitting your biz to become a full-time smoothie bowl influencer (tempting though). It’s all about making small tweaks to bring the good vibes into your everyday.

Here are a few playful, real-life ways to make WFH more fun during the summer—even if you're still knee-deep in deadlines.

1. Move Your Office Outside (or At Least Near a Window)

Take your laptop to the porch. Work from your patio. Heck, sit in the grass with a picnic blanket and a hotspot. Even if you can’t be fully unplugged, being surrounded by sunshine and fresh air actually changes your brain chemistry in the best way. Bonus: it gives you main character energy.

2. Swap Your Regular Coffee for an Iced Summer Pick-Me-Up

You’ve probably seen the TikToks. Iced matcha with coconut milk? A shaken espresso with vanilla cold foam? Even just cold brew in a mason jar with a cute straw? It’s the little rituals that make you look forward to sitting down at your desk (or blanket fort).

3. Switch Up Your Work Hours for More Daylight Freedom

If your schedule allows it, shift your work block earlier in the day—so you can peace out by 3 and still have hours of sunshine left. Work from 7 to 2? Iconic. That’s the kind of energy that screams, “I run my business and I get to swim in the afternoon.”

4. Build in a Midday Joy Break (That Has Nothing to Do With Productivity)

This isn’t your typical lunch break. I’m talking about a 30-minute bike ride, a solo dance party, a watermelon snack on the porch, or a walk around the block while blasting your favorite nostalgic summer playlist. No goal. No purpose. Just joy.

5. Make Summer Friday Hours a Thing (Even If You’re the Only One on Payroll)

Remember those half-day Fridays from your 9–5 days? Reclaim them. Block out your calendar. Let clients know you’re unavailable. Schedule admin work for Thursday and give yourself the gift of an early weekend. Your future burnt-out self will thank you.

6. Refresh Your Workspace with Summer Vibes

No need to remodel. Just add a pop of citrus-scented candles, switch your desktop wallpaper to a beachy scene, grab a $4 bouquet from Trader Joe’s, or swap out your throw pillow for one that screams “I brunch by the pool.” Tiny upgrades, big impact.

7. Say Yes to More Midweek Mini-Adventures

The beauty of being your own boss? Tuesday morning farmer’s markets. Wednesday lake dips. Thursday morning bagels with a friend. Stop waiting for the weekend. You’re allowed to build your work life around your real life.

8. Dress for the Summer Business You Want

Gone are the days of stiff office attire. But let’s retire the sad pajama pants too. Summer’s the perfect excuse to wear that breezy sundress, linen romper, or lightweight jumpsuit that makes you feel like your higher self just got back from a branding shoot in Tulum.

9. Keep a Summer Fun Bucket List (Yes, Really)

You know how fast summer flies. Write out the summer-y things you actually want to do, then sprinkle them into your calendar like you would client work. Rooftop drinks? Midday movie? Backyard dinner party? If you don’t schedule joy, it’ll get bulldozed by your inbox.

10. Romanticize the Heck Out of Your Routine

Light a candle. Make a vibey playlist. Open your window. Work barefoot. Start the morning journaling with your iced drink and a book instead of doom-scrolling. Summer is a whole vibe—and you can absolutely make your workdays feel like part of it.

Final Word: Your business is important, yes. But so are you. Your joy. Your health. Your sense of presence. Summer won’t wait—and you don’t have to hit pause on your career to enjoy it.

So go ahead and sip that iced matcha while sending that proposal. Take the walk. Romanticize your Google Calendar. Make this the summer you built your business around your life, not the other way around.
